Device dialog

Use the Device dialog to define a device's profile (its friendly and unique names, password, serial number, etc), its connection options, and its message queue configuration ("communications") options (if different than those for the device's associated device type).

Fields

Basic profile (not labeled)

Name

Type the name of the new device (up to 100 characters). This is the "friendly name" that will be displayed to users. Although "friendly names" need not be unique, you should use names with enough distinctiveness to help users to distinguish one device from another.

Unique Name

Type a unique name for the device. This name uniquely identifies for the system this device from all other devices.

Best Practice for
device names

A device's unique name must be unique across the entire system. When choosing device names (whether they will be created through the application UI, auto-registration, or data import), follow a convention that will guarantee system-wide unique names. Consider concatenating identifiers such as the product model, serial number, product code, in order to yield a unique device name.

Password

Type the device's password (up to 64 characters).

NOTE: The format of passwords is governed by a password policy. The default policy dictates that a password must be from 5 to 31 characters long and can contain the lowercase letters a–z, uppercase letters A–Z, and digits 0–9. If the password you are trying to enter is rejected, contact the system administrator to determine the proper password requirements.

Confirm password

Type the password again to confirm it.

Device Type

Select the device's device type.

Device Category

Select the applicable category, such as BILLABLE.

Device Time Zone

Select the time zone where the device is located.

Serial Number

Type the device's serial number (up to 128 characters).

Description

Type the description of the device (up to 255 characters).

Connection options (not labeled)

Network address

Type the device's IP address, or a name that can be mapped to an address via a name service (such as DNS). The IP address is essential for a contactable device but is for reference purposes only for a non-contactable device

Network accessible

Select Yes or No depending on whether the device is accessible on the network (in other words, is a contactable device).

Connection Mode

Select the device's mode of connection:

  • Standard — The device is always connected to the Internet and has access to the Enterprise server.

  • Courier — The device is a disconnected device. It may be a standalone device or belong to a local area network that does not have access to the Internet and, therefore, never has access to the Enterprise server. Service is provided to it via site visits and the Questra Courier application. For information on site visits, see Site Visits - An Overview. For information on delivering site visits to disconnected devices, refer to the Questra Courier User Guide, provided as a PDF with other Questra IDM Application Suite manuals.)

Message Queue Configuration

Retry count

If the device is contactable, type the number of attempts (after a failed attempt) that will be made to send a message to the device before the message is discarded. For example, a value of 3 will allow for four attempts (the first one that fails plus three more).

If the device is not contactable, type the number of poll cycles that will be allowed to be missed before a message is discarded. For example, a value of 3 will allow for four poll cycles to be missed (the first one that fails plus three more).

Retry Interval

(Contactable device only) Type the number of seconds between attempts to send a message.

Pending poll interval

(Non-contactable device only) Type the number of seconds desired between poll attempts. For example, for hourly polling, type 3600.

NOTE: This value will change the polling interval for the device and override the initial polling interval specified in the device's Service Agent configuration file.

Protocol

Select the communications protocol over which messages are sent to this device.
