Searching for devices, groups, users, or configurations

As described in Understanding views and context, one method for navigating to a particular device is to select it from Group view or Device Type view, in other words, to drill down to it. Alternatively, you can search for devices and then select one from the search results. You can also search for a specific group, user, or configuration.

Best Practice for finding devices

If you're looking for devices that require attention, you can also look at the Alerts panel for your top-level groups. If you're trying to find a specific device in a large population of devices, it is more efficient to search for the device or browse to it by using a well-known group hierarchy (e.g., Geography and its subgroups).

Device search

You can search for any device that belongs to a group you own. To begin the search, click Search in the header of the Navigation pane's Groups panel to open the Search dialog. The dialog is set by default to search for devices, and only the Name and Serial Number fields are open in the Search Criteria pane at the left. To reveal all of this pane's fields, click +Advanced Search. Complete the desired fields. For a wildcard to represent any string or character, use *. (Partial strings are not allowed.)

When ready to run the search, click Search. After a few moments, the search results appear on the Search Result pane at the right; the total number of matching devices appears above the pane. To set the context to one of the devices, select it on the Search Result pane and click OK. Alternatively, double-click a device. (If you are an administrator and are assigning devices to a static group, you can select multiple devices to add to the group.)

Group, user, and configuration searches

NOTE: Your searches will be limited by your group ownership.

To begin the search, click Search in the header of the Navigation pane's Groups panel to open the Search dialog. At the top of the Search Criteria pane at the left, select Group. User, or Configuration and then complete the group fields, user fields, or configuration fields as needed. The * wildcard is allowed. (Partial strings are not allowed.) When ready to run the search, click Search. The results are shown at the right.

After a group search, you can set the context to one of the matching groups by selecting it from the results and clicking OK. Alternatively, double-click the group.

NOTE: Unlike searching for devices and groups, you cannot select user or configuration from the search results. Rather, this kind of search is exclusively for informational purposes.
