Configuring alarms

Opening the Alerts and Alarms dialog

You begin all your configuration tasks for alerts and alarms from the Alerts and Alarms dialog. To open this dialog, locate the System Configuration tasks on the Action pane's Configuration panel and click Manage alerts and alarms.

Adding alarms and assigning alerts to them

When you add an alarm, you define its details (name, description, etc.) and assign alerts to it. In order to save a new alert, you must enter at least its details.

Open the Alerts and Alarms dialog and switch to the Alarms tab. Click Add to open the Alarm dialog. On the Details tab, complete the fields as needed. For example, make sure that you select the Enabled check box to enable the alarm.

Switch to the Assigned Alerts tab, which lists all existing alerts. Select the check box for each alert you want to assign to the new alarm.

NOTE: If you have not yet added any alerts, you can add just the new alarm's details and come back at a later time to assign alerts to it.

To save the new alarm, click Add.

Viewing an alarm's definition without opening it for editing

Open the Alerts and Alarms dialog and switch to the Alarms tab. In the list of alarms, select the alarm whose definition you want to view. After a few moments, the alarm's definition appears in the bottom part of the dialog.

Forcing alarms

You can test an alarm by forcing it to trigger for a device. By forcing an alarm, you are essentially triggering the alarm's associated alert, thereby starting the servicing or maintenance process.

In order to test an alarm, close the Alerts and Alarms dialog if it is currently open, and select a device. If you want to test that alert escalation works as you expect it to, select a device in the branch of the group hierarchy in which the alert should escalate. If you simply want to test that an alarm event is generated, you can select any valid device.

Now reopen the Alerts and Alarms dialog and switch to the Alarms tab. Select the alarm you want to test. After a few moments, the alarm's definition appears in the Details subtab. Click Force Alarm to open the Force Alarm dialog. Complete the fields and click Submit.

Editing alarms

NOTE: You can edit custom alarms, but not the default (System) alarms.

When editing an alarm, you can modify its details (name, description, etc.) and its assigned alerts.

Open the Alerts and Alarms dialog and switch to the Alarms tab. From the list of alarms, select the alarm you want to edit and click Edit to open the Alarm dialog. To edit the alarm, use the techniques described in Adding alarms and assigning alerts to them, above. To save your changes, click Save.

Deleting alarms

NOTE: You can delete custom alarms, but not the default (System) alarms.

Open the Alerts and Alarms dialog and switch to the Alarms tab. From the list of alarms, select the custom alarm you want to delete and click Delete . In response to the confirmation message that opens, click Yes.
