You may configure dynamic group definitions for any static group that you own.
The first step in working with dynamic groups is to add a dynamic group definition. Once a dynamic group is created based on the definition, you can assign customers, owners, and rules to it. You can also delete a dynamic group and/or its corresponding dynamic group definition.

Understanding dynamic group definitions
All configuration tasks for dynamic groups begin with the Groups dialog. To open this dialog, locate the System Configuration tasks on the Action pane's Configuration panel and click Manage groups. (In order to manage dynamic groups, it is not necessary to select a group on the Navigation pane's Groups panel.)
Adding a dynamic group definition
You may add dynamic group definitions to any static group that you own.
When you add a dynamic group definition, you give the definition a unique name, specify the criteria by which devices will be evaluated to determine in which dynamic group they belong, and specify the hierarchy of the dynamic groups that will reside as subgroups to a parent static group. When matching devices are found, the dynamic groups will be created.
NOTE: Before adding your first dynamic group definition, we suggest you study the examples in Understanding dynamic group definitions.
To add a dynamic group definition, open the Groups dialog and select
the static group that you want for the parent of the dynamic groups. Switch
to the Definitions tab and click Add on this tab to open the Dynamic
Group Definitions dialog. Complete the fields. To save the new definition,
click Add. After a few moments, the Definitions tab is refreshed to show
the new definition. At this point, you can now test (evaluate) the definition.
Evaluating a dynamic group definition
Once you have created a dynamic group definition, you can test (evaluate) it.
On the Groups dialog with the parent group selected, select the dynamic group definition you want to evaluate on the Definitions tab. Click Evaluate to open the Evaluate dialog. Accept the defaults (which are the current date and time) or change them as desired, and then click Save. When devices are found that meet the membership criteria, the dynamic group(s) are created.
Editing dynamic group definitions and dynamic groups
You may edit only those dynamic group definitions that belong to static groups you own.
You can edit a dynamic group definition to change its name, description, and subgroup hierarchy and membership rules.
To edit the dynamic group
definition, open the Groups dialog and select the definition's parent
static group on the Groups list. Switch to the Definitions tab, select
the dynamic group definition, and click Edit .
NOTE: Any dynamic groups created by the original definition will continue to exist, and new dynamic groups will be created based on the edited definition.
To edit a dynamic group, open the Groups dialog and select the dynamic group on the Groups list. You can now edit the dynamic group in the following ways (using the techniques described in Configuring static groups):
On the Profile tab, you can edit anything except the group's name. For example, here you can associate customers with the dynamic group.
On the Owners tab, you can assign owners to the dynamic group.
On the Rules tab, you can assign rules to the dynamic group if you so choose.
Deleting dynamic group definitions and dynamic groups
You may delete only those dynamic group definitions (and their corresponding dynamic groups) that belong to static groups you own.
If you plan to delete dynamic groups, be sure as well to delete the corresponding dynamic group definition that created them. Otherwise, the dynamic groups will just be recreated.
To delete a dynamic group,
open the Groups dialog, select the dynamic group on the Groups list, and
click Delete . In response to the confirmation message that opens, click Yes.
To delete a dynamic group definition, select the definition's
parent static group on the Groups list. Switch to the Definitions tab,
select the dynamic group definition, and click Delete . In response to the confirmation message
that opens, click Yes.
Caution! Be aware that the process of deleting a group will also delete the association/assignments of the customer, owners, and rules with all the devices that had made up the custom group. There may be unintended consequences resulting from the deletion. For example, if the individual devices did not have their own addresses, the customer's address was being used for them. Until you supply addresses for the devices, or assign them to a different group with which a customer has been associated, the devices will have no addresses.
