Devices dialog

Use the Devices dialog as the starting place for managing device types and devices. From here, you can define device types and manually add devices or edit those devices that have auto-registered.

Device Types list

This list shows the existing device types.

Devices list

This list shows the names of devices associated with the select device type.

Profile tab

This tab shows the profile and the message queue configuration of the selected device. You can edit the device directly on this dialog.

Profile

Friendly Name

(Read only) The name of the device as shown to users.

Unique Name

(Read only) The unique name for the device.

Device ID

(Read only) The internal system-defined ID for the device.

Reset Password

Click to open the Reset Password dialog where you can change the selected device's password.

CAUTION! Change the password here only when it has already been changed on the device itself, in order to keep the two passwords synchronized. Otherwise, the device will not be to able contact the Enterprise server.

Serial Number

Type the device's serial number (up to 128 characters).

Description

Type the description of the device (up to 255 characters).

Display Label

Type the user-friendly name of the device (up to 100 characters).

Network address

Type the device's IP address. (The IP address is essential for a contactable device but is for reference purposes only for a non-contactable device.)

Network accessible

Select Yes or No depending on whether the device is accessible on the network (in other words, is a contactable device).

Connection Mode

Select the device's mode of connection:

  • Standard — The device is always connected to the Internet and has access to the Enterprise server.

  • Courier — The device is a disconnected device. It may be a standalone device or belong to a local area network that does not have access to the Internet and, therefore, never has access to the Enterprise server. Service is provided to it via site visits and the Questra Courier application. (For information on site visits, see Site Visits - An Overview. For information on Questra Courier, refer to the Questra Courier User Guide, provided as a PDF with other Questra IDM Application Suite manuals.)

Status

The device's status, such as Registered.

Device Type

From this drop-down list, select the device type with which you want to associate the device. (For more information, see Changing a device's associated device type.)

Device Category

The device's category, such as BILLABLE.

Device Time Zone

The device's time zone.

Message Queue Configuration

Retry count

If the device is contactable, type the number of attempts (after a failed attempt) that will be made to send a message to the device before the message is discarded. For example, a value of 3 will allow for four attempts (the first one that fails plus three more).

If the device is not contactable, type the number of poll cycles that will be allowed to be missed before a message is discarded. For example, a value of 3 will allow for four poll cycles to be missed (the first one that fails plus three more).

Retry Interval

(Contactable device only) Type the number of seconds between attempts to send a message.

Pending poll interval

(Non-contactable device only) Type the number of seconds desired between poll attempts. For example, for hourly polling, type 3600.

Protocol

Select the communications protocol over which messages are sent to this device.

Address tab

On this tab, you can define the device's address.

Address 1; Address 2; City; State or Province; Postal Code

Enter the device's street address, city, state or province, and zip or postal code.

Best Practice for using customer addresses but not device addresses

Each device typically has an actual address, that is, a location, but if it does not have one, the Questra IDM Application Suite uses the customer's address as the device's address. The advantage of using a customer address is that, when you change a customer address, the addresses of the devices in the group with which the customer is associated are changed as well.

Country

Select the device's country.

Description

Type a description of this address (up to 255 characters).

Latitude

(See the NOTE below table to determine if you need to complete this field.) Type the device's latitude in a decimal format.* For a latitude south of the equator, use a negative value.

Longitude

(See the NOTE below table to determine if you need to complete this field.) Type the device's longitude in a decimal format.* For a longitude west of the prime meridian, use a negative value.

*Rather than in degrees, minutes, and seconds.

NOTE: If a device auto-registers as it is brought online and its Service Agent provides its latitude and longitude, you do not need to do anything with these fields. If you are manually adding the device to the system and want to use its address (rather than a customer's address; see the Best Practice above), you will need to enter the latitude and longitude values. You can determine the device's latitude and longitude coordinates from its city or postal code. There are tools readily available on the Internet for converting a city or postal code to latitude and longitude coordinates.

Properties tab

This tab lists all the properties that have been defined for the selected device.

TotalAccess tab

This tab lists the TotalAccess connections that have been defined for the selected device.

Rules tab

This tab lists the rules that have been defined for the selected device.

Groups tab

This tab lists the groups to which the selected device belongs.

Devices may be manually assigned to static groups and automatically assigned to dynamic groups; for more information, see the Group configuration book.

Available Services tab

This tab lists the web service interfaces that are defined for the selected device.

NOTE: In general, the Questra IDM Application Suite manages the web services associated with devices automatically. In some cases, such as devices that are not connected to the Enterprise server, you may want to manually associate available services with a device type or individual device.
